Virginia Zanetti – Walking on Water. Miracle & Utopia

To question concepts like miracle and utopia, the artist asked friends and colleagues to describe their visions through texts which, together with a performance, formed the work presented at the Biennial of the Mediterranean in Ancona, Italy. Both concepts have a certain degree of wrongness – both are thought as being unrealizable and unreachable.

The work was inspired by a rock called “Trave.” According to the legend, it was once extended to the other side of the Adriatic sea, as a sign of brotherhood, until the elements destroyed it. By watching this collective action of walking on submerged rocks, one has the actual impression of assisting to ‘walking on water.’

The video of the performance was also projected in San Servolo’s tower bell in Buje, Croatia, as part of the Vizura Aperta festival. The long climb necessary to reach it led to the surprise effect of finding such a work at the top of the tower. A ‘miracle’ as a gift to the viewer.
