FlashBack. All art is contemporary

Desperate times call for desperate measures, a motto says. That’s what’s happening to art in Italy, where its state is not desperate but, at least, one of a kind. FlashBack is a new fair born and raised with the specific intent to demonstrate a statement by critic Gino De Dominicis, saying that all art is contemporary; bringing new life and a new public to Italian galleries, and re-opening the Italian market to an international audience. Held in Turin during the same days of Artissima, FlashBack registered a huge success, with more than 11 thousand visitors. The project is simple and it worked: it put together galleries specialized in different periods and kinds of art in order to attract the most extended attention with an accurate care in the choice of the exhibitors. The result has been something similar to a XIX Century Great Exhibition… in small dimensions. Masterpieces from the Renaissance hanging close to pictures by David LaChapelle; ancient Japanese armors and fine artistic jewelry from XX century beside Flemish paintings; special exhibitions dedicated to contemporary art. Everything has been exquisite, a little anachronistic and, precisely for this reason, appreciated. Talks for next year’s exhibitors have already started and many galleries from abroad will appear. Will the future of art become affordable?
