Women artists in contemporary Italy. Autoritratti at MAMbo
You should know it first: it’s a [pink]gender-based project. Autoritratti at MAMbo, Bologna showcases contemporary Italian artists, selected and introduced by female curators. But this wouldn’t be the point. Grasping instead its deeper intentions, the idea of Uliana Zanetti, in concert with the museum direction, aims to start a critical reflection about the role and dignity that female artists have conquered in the contemporary art scene and public art spaces during the last three decades.
A long list of names, points of view, contributors and art visions in such an enormous space makes it very difficult to catch so many possible meanings and observations. The whole operation is remarkable and with noble intent, still it leaves you with a sensation of mess and unresolved result. Well, it’s a beginning: we’ll see what will come next.
