Meeting of cultures, communication complexity, need of protection: these are the themes on which Sinae Yoo focuses her reflection. The work by this Korean artist – currently living in Switzerland – is hosted by The Gallery Apart, Rome as her first solo exhibition in Italy. Curated by Domenico de Chirico, Shadow Rift showcases installations, drawings, ceramics, and a video. The artworks are in a permanent dialogue between East and West, tangible and intangible, authenticity and transformation. Among the others, a transparent mobile shield works as an obstacle to communication, though without preventing it; and a video, where a blind girl swims in bluescreen-like waters, protected by a code.

At the centre of Sinae Yoo’s work lies a constant search for purity, recalled by the whiteness of Nivea cream. Its packaging – characterized by a deep blue that can be found within the whole exhibition – is black coloured though. A black that is in contrast with the pure white of the content, and evokes that from which we need to purify ourselves in the name of mental, physical and digital hygiene.

Sinae Yoo: Shadow Rift, curated by Domenico de Chirico is on view at The Gallery Apart, Roma, through February 11, 2017
