2013 Biennial | deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum, Lincoln MA
Currently on view at deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum in Lincoln, MA is the museum’s 2013 Biennial. The exhibition focuses on the New England art scene and includes twenty-one artists from each New England state working in a variety of mediums and subject matters. Not only does the Biennial fill four floors of the museum but it also flows through the hallways and stairwells in addition to spilling out into the museum’s breathtaking sculpture park. There is, undoubtedly, something for every art patron to enjoy.
Visitors are greeted by one of Pat Falco’s many satirical signs at the entrance to the museum. These signs pop up throughout the grounds of the park and floors of the museum. While they are witty and literally describe a physical truth about the space they occupy, they also suggest a very real truth about the art and social world.
Another noteworthy work on view is Laura Braciale’s Untitled. Initially, this installation seems simple and not particularly noteworthy until, as the description of the installation states, the viewer does a “double take”. Braciale takes found objects and creates two-dimensional paintings of them. The paintings and the objects are placed in the same space leaving the viewer to study the differences between the two. Braciale begs the question, which is more “real”?
Almost diagonally across from Laura Braciale’s installation is Lynne’ Harlow’s site-specific installation that at first glance, seems like a basic ode to Minimalism. The viewer is faced with a large, bright orange wall. Then, there’s music. The music vibrates from within the orange fabric. The realization that the music is a part of the installation allows the viewer to interact with the space in a new and enlightening way.
There are a multitude of themes and metaphors waiting to be interpreted at the 2013 Biennial at deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum. New England is strongly and proudly represented by the twenty-one artists in participation. This exhibit is not one to pass up.
