Artissima 2019 – 26th Edition: desire/censorship

This year, for the 26th edition of the Artissima art fair – a 3-day event held from October 31st (preview) to November 3rd, 2019 at the Oval Lingotto in Turin – the organizers worked hard to best frame the main goal of showcasing research in the field of visual arts, within an interesting cultural theme. The motif for Artissima 2019 is the duality of desire/censorship. A red line that invites the audience to explore those feelings that irrationally push us to act in order to achieve something. Among the artworks and the art projects, the audience will be invited to act as a real character in the art system, envisioning what the distinction between needs and desires (which are mimetic) is. The objective is to stimulate timely and varied reflections on the power of the image: contemporary ambitions and utopias, the impulses that shape our times, and the perspectives and narratives that cross them.

This year, the fair aims to offer more and more important insights – from both an artistic and a political-philosophical point of view – to account for contemporary phenomena such as potential, agency, conflicts, and sexuality.

What’s new in Artissima 2019?

Hub Middle East: this new geographically-focused section is the result of a collaboration between Artissima and Fondazione Torino Musei. Hub Middle East is a new project that sets out to offer an overview of galleries, institutions and artists active in a geographical area of central importance for developments in contemporary society.

Abstract Sex: We don’t have any clothes, only equipment is the title of the exhibition that brings the fair into the city of Turin this year. The show investigates the importance of desire in the most recent artistic and cultural research through videos, sculptures, works on canvas, paper, and objects presented by the galleries taking part in Artissima 2019. The project, conceived by Ilaria Bonacossa, is curated by Lucrezia Calabrò Visconti and Guido Costa, and takes place at Jana, a city centre boutique.

Artissima Telephone carries on last year’s investigation into sound with an exhibition project created for the spaces of OGR – Officine Grandi Riparazioni. Conceived by Ilaria Bonacossa and curated by Vittoria Martini, the exhibition offers a survey of the use of the telephone as an art medium.

Returning for Artissima 2019

Once again, this year Artissima will feature seven sections: four sections selected by the fair’s committee (Main Section, New Entries, Dialogue, Art Spaces & Editions), and three sections curated by a team of international curators (Present Future, Back to the Future, Disegni).
Present Future, the curated section for emerging talent, is the result of research conducted by the curatorial team, composed of Ilaria Gianni (coordinator), independent curator based in Rome, Juan Canela, independent curator and art critic based in Barcelona, and Émilie Villez, Director at KADIST, Paris.
Back to the Future is the curated section focused on the rediscovery of contemporary art pioneers. It is celebrating its 10th anniversary with Artissima 2019, and is coordinated by Lorenzo Giusti, Director of GAMeC – Galleria d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea, Bergamo, with a curatorial team composed of Cristiano Raimondi, independent curator and Artistic Director of Società delle Api, and Nicolas Trembley, independent curator, art critic and curator of the SYZ Collection, Geneva.
Disegni is the section of the fair open to all forms of contemporary drawing, once again curated, for the third year in a row, by João Mourão and Luís Silva, Directors of the Kunsthalle Lissabon, Lisbon.

Droste Effect will be media partner again at Artissima 2019, and will be taking part in #ArtissimaLive, a newsroom project coordinated by Elena Bordignon (ATP Diary).
We will be at the #ArtissimaLive booth on Saturday and Sunday, November 2-3.

Additionally, we will present our publication Stressed, Blessed and Coffee Obsessed by Débora Delmar at GALLLERIAPIÙ’s booth (n 18 – Present Future) at 12 PM.

We invite you to follow us in this new adventure, and we look forward to meeting all the art lovers in the desirable city of Turin.
