Four oustanding solo shows at Zabludowicz Collection London
The Zabludowicz Collection’s London project space is a very unique location – a former Methodist chapel from 1870. This time the Collection has decided to present the work of 4 contemporary artists. The exhibition space is big enough to give each artist the amount of space they deserve, and these can be therefore considered solo shows. Nevertheless, the presented artwork show a common ground, where the element of time and its passage is involved.
Sam Falls opens the exhibition path with both sculptural and 2-dimensional works, all dealing with the time-based nature of photography, or at least the effect that light and time can impress onto one object. In the next room, Adriano Costa’s installations assemble simple, worn-out objects – some of which refer to a barren imagery of South-American reminiscence – which embed a strong narrative charge. In another hall, Samara Scott presents her thick layered works, which she builds by using “a slow digestion of cosmetic, edible and checmical cultural debris” – a powerful mix between the concrete and the superficial, the disposable. Taking advantage of the former church’s upper matroneum, Micheal E. Smith’s sculptures/installations use “found objects of an abject nature” which he then sometimes modifies by adding something or by damaging them (deadly remains of animals, molten plastic materials, encrusted cloths), thus allowing a direct confrontation with these objects’ past and present.
