Intervals – Allora & Calzadilla in Philadelphia at The Fabric Workshop

Last Sunday it was a super cold day in Philly, so I spent the whole afternoon at The Fabric Workshop. A friend of mine was my tour guide through the city, which I was visiting for the first time. She, as an artist, suggested me to go and visit the FWM because the founder of this unique museum center was a close friend of her parents.

The FWM was born in 1977 and its visionary purpose (to share the process of artistic creation with the public, and to stimulate experimentation among contemporary artists by creating a network) allowed for it to grow faster and to make itself recognized as an internationally acclaimed contemporary art museum. The roaster of the artist direction includes names as: Marina Abramovic, Laurie Anderson, Daniel Arsham, Chris Burden, Nick Cave, Jennifer Allora & Guillermo Calzadilla. The last duo I mentioned is now presenting at FWM a unique new exhibition that will be on till April 5.

Allora & Calzadilla are a collaborative duo of visual artists who now live and work in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Jennifer Allora was born in Philly and, also for this reason, they have been involved in lots of different activities inside The Fabric Workshop. Their last works are here presented through three main installations: the first one, on the upper floor, is mainly sculptural; the second I saw is based on a visual dialogue between three screens displaying a video; the last one, on the first floor, is a sound installation that introduces the visitor into a fascinating experience beyond times.
Allora & Calzadilla note, “Intervals revels in the unknowable as essential to human experience. The exhibition bears witness to incomplete presences and resonant remainders. It finds in music a measure and a reckoning with these elusive forces and the abyss that lies between.”
